Scenes from the French Alps

Check out Force Majeure, a 2014 film by Swedish writer and director, Ruben Ostland. It depicts a family on a ski holiday in the French Alps. An avalanche strikes while they're having lunch on an outdoor balcony, leading to stress reactions and family disruption. We loved the exquisitely beautiful alpine scenery and great skiing scenes; the family drama is reminiscent of Bergman. A Golden Globe nominee, this film has also received multiple awards in venues to include the Cannes Film Festival. Here's a youtube link for a trailer.

Our Lives are Swiss

Our lives are Swiss -
So still - so Cool -
Till some odd afternoon
The Alps neglect their Curtains
And we look farther on!

Italy stands the other side!
While like a guard between -
The solemn Alps -
The siren Alps
Forever Intervene!

Emily Dickinson (c. 1859)
